i was wondering why i didn't get any replies on my post yesterday.454ih 179dih wanted to know how to time this motor. can any body help me thanks.
 
Best to get a service manual, if I recall the injection pump drive gear has three marks as it's the same gear used on three, four, and six cylinder engines, each using a different mark. Need to check, but think the injection pump mark is to be aligned at 14 degrees BTDC on # one cylinder compression stroke.
 
Hi Case589, could you please give more detail on the reason for re-timing the D-179?
Was it complete engine rebuild or injection pump was removed for repair and the 3 locking bolts were loosened on the injection
pump hub drive gear?

the crank broke.i took the idler pully loose and turned the gears to line up with the number 3dot. i turned the pump gear alittle to get gears to line up.i turned motor to number 1 compression stroke.not sure if the pump would still be in time.there is a dial pin on the front of the crank.do you line the dialpin with gears.with number 1 piston up on compression stroke the three locking bolts wasn't ioosened.its just a bearing and a crank job.the pump and pump gear hasn't been loosened.iguess i just need to the best procedure to get it back together.thanks for your reply. dave
