farmall 460/560 serial question

Everyone,

I've read in an article that 460/560's that had updates for rear end issues were marked with and "X" on the serial tag. Is this true at all? I'm looking for a 560, just wondering if there is a way to know

Thanks all!

If it is still working it has been fixed at least once , I
love farmall but haven't seen a 460/560 ,that hasn't been
fixed . There rearends weren't solid enough for folks in
this area because most were short to break and then break
and you get the picture.

Farmall 560 serial number 23926 and higher were built with the last differential and bull gears upgrade and not marked. Few more upgrades were added later but not marked on serial plate. Some were marked as a triangle and some look more like a diamond. Think it depended on how straight the stamper was.

Yes, I believe the "official" shape was a triangle, but that's assuming the mechanic remembered to stamp the serial tag. I've heard rumors that there are a lot of tractors out there with the updates that did not get stamped.

Remember also that it was only the early 460's and 560's with the problems, and it was almost 60 years ago that this happened. If you find an original 460 or 560 that has not had the updates, you have a true collector's item. I can't imagine that more than a handful of tractors out there that haven't had the updates.

I will tell this I have a 61 farmall 460 with no markings
that I know was fixed twice because I have pictures
somewhere , from the first rearends failure in 63' and
then the second rear end failure in 66' or 67' . My
grandpa bought this tractor brand new in 1963 and was
intended to replace a wr9 however in 67' he bought a 806
that finally did replace the old 9 .

At 50 plus years old I doubt you'll be doing anything to it that hasn't been done to it before. As stated the later models were not "stamped" because the upgrades to the rear end made as a running change on the assembly line.

The way to tell for sure is to remove the left brake outer housing and the brake disks. Look at the part number on the backing plate. If it matches the late style number in the parts book you have an updated model. That is how I found out on the early Farmall 460 I once owned.

Since most tractors that size will not likely see much real hard work like plowing or such anymore I would doubt it matters much whether the updates are there or not. Most are used for parades or putter work like an auger or such. Even our 806 and 856 are getting to be putter tractors with the size of equipment these days.
