CaseIH Low Ash Engine Oil Exact Alternate?????

I know engine oil has been beat to death, but.....

Is there an EXACT replacement brand oil to CaseIH SAE 30 Low Ash Oil (Akcela) ?????

I've been doing some searching and maybe I'm missing it. I can find a NAPA cross for an oil filter, an Autolite cross for a spark plug - but not a cross for this CaseIH low ash oil.

I'm not looking for - " I've used this for years"...... I'm looking for an EXACT spec for spec replacement.

This is for an 756 with the C-291 gas engine.

Not opposed to buying CaseIH oil, but it would be an hour closer (one way) to our local NAPA store than the dealer.

Thanks!

Bill

That chart, at least, gives you the specs to look for:

API CF; API CF-2/SL

If the oil meets that spec, it's as "exact" as you're going to get, because there really is no EXACT alternative for any oil. They all vary a little from brand to brand due to what I suspect are proprietary components in the additives packages.

CaseIH has probably had different manufacturers make their oil over the years. Bid it out every so often. What is supposed to make it better?

Viscosity oil always made the oils for IH ever since IH started marketing engine oils. It became a IH owned company and even after Tenaco bought IH farm equipment division, it was still part of the company. Can't say what it is now. The low ash oil had the calcium , barium and magnesium eliminated, not just lowered and that is why it is not recommended for Diesel engines. Other low ash oils have their own formulations and not necessarily the same additives. I attended several presentations by Viscosity Oil Co. reps back in the day as they would be part of IH product introduction meetings and also at service training sessions.

Viscosity Oil is now owned by Petronas Lubricants. Its a private label company. I don't know if they actually own a refinery or if they are another layer between companies that actually produce oil and ones that sell oil.

Since we only have one gas tractor and the cars/pickup, we just use the same oil we use in the diesels. Been doing that for years like about 30-40. Can't see a difference from it. The H starts anytime even down in the -20 temperatures.

I think that when IH went to higher compression engines than the older H, M, type tractors and increased the hp, the fix for burnt valves was a low ash oil.

No they IIRC are about 1%. The issue is that the 6 sylinder IH engines were made with no valve seals. The high ash oils coked up the valves and caused many engines to go low on power and or burn valves from coking. Google Valve coking on gasoline engines. It can get to the point where the intake (and some times exhaust valves restrict the flow of intake fuel/air. If the engine has had Perfect Circle Style positive valve seals installed, I would use any modern detergent oil in it. Jim

Bill, check with Southern States (Sufferin States?). Their Superol 15w-40 fits that bill.
