Oil leak on 450 front bolster

Hey guys, getting ready to restore my 450 and I have oil leaking down the front bolster, on the shaft. I am pretty new to this whole deal, and have never taken a bolster apart so not real sure what I am getting into. I guess what I'm hoping to get is an exact seal location, what all I will need to tear down to get to it, and maybe even a part number and where to get it? Steering is still very tight on this tractor, so I don't see much of a need to replace any other parts on bolster. Thanks for any help!

The pivot shaft seal is kind of a bugger to get at and replace - a couple large/heavy parts must be removed to get at the seal. Since you have no other issues with the steering I'd simply pack the gearbox with good chassis or corn head grease and call it good. It'll lube the worm gearset as well a the OEM gear oil, and it won't leak past a worn seal.

I did this with leaky steering boxes on both my Super H and Super M. Neither has leaked a drop in 10+ years.

Bob M has the answer. Corn Head grease is a sticky simi paste. JD and others sell it in tubs or tubes. remove the lid from
the box, and remove as much oil as you can with paper towels. Pack it full and all is well. Jim

Don't know about a 450, but I whipped up my own 50-50 blend red wheel bearing grease and 90 wt. oil in a coffee can with a coat hanger and my drill, and poured it in the steering chamber on my H. You can make it thick or thin as you like. I also discovered I did not actually have seals, somebody removed them, so I pulled in new. Had to devise my on contraption to pull them in, a mix of washers, all-thread, duct-tape, sockets of various sizes, more duct tape, I think there was a dowel rod in there someplace. But I pulled in new seals. The U-side up, so it fills up with grease. Works great. In my case, I had to buy three seals; smashed first one, bent second one, third time charmed. Gotta hold your mouth just right .... Grease must be Farmall red, otherwise it won't work....

Okay so far you have only had suggestions for band-aid fixes. That may or may not be what you
are looking for. I will attach a recent post by another YT'er "eastside" that covered the repair on
his H. His photos and descriptions pretty well cover what you are asking about. The bolster for
your 450 is nearly identical except for everything is scaled up in size and weight.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Guess I never thought of simply throwing grease in there, but seems like it would work fine to me. Appreciate all the knowledge gentlemen!
