IH 684, d239 tank heater and coolant questions

Hi,

I have a late 684 with the d239 diesel. It currently has a coolant heater in the radiator hose however the heater is no longer working and the hose needs to be replaced soon. I would like to add a tank heater as I feel they work better however can anyone give me some tips on where best to plumb one in on this engine.

The tractor used to have the factory starting fluid system however it was disconnected before I bought the tractor. The tractor starts well even when fairly cold but a heater adds some insurance for winter and I prefer to warm the engine rather than using starting fluid when possible.

I will renew the coolant when I replace the hose and add a heater. Has anyone added a coolant filter to one of these motors or should I just continue to check the coolant occasionally with the test strips? The tractor doesn't get used a lot of hours but I want to keep it working well for many years!

Thanks

Unless you are in a terribly cold area, I'd stick with the lower radiator hose heater. There should be no problem heating up a small engine like that with one.

Hi, my brother has a tank heater on his 684. It is plumbed with water heater hose from the plug in the water jacket on top right of engine with the heater hose thread
down behind the fan to the top of the tank heater. The tank heater is mounted down between the starter and the injection pump. The bottom of the tank heater is connected
to the block rain. The top of the tank heater has to be mounted below the lever of the block drain. Somewhere I have a photo of a tank heater mounted on a D-239 in a 574.

We have had the lower rad hose heater for over 30years on our 574 we have changed it over the years as they go bad but work good there.

I'd go for the tank heater, have one on a D179 and no worries starting even with a working either injector.

On a side note, What is the story on Taylor's outside Tata, drove by there this weekend and lot is full of equipment and looks over grown and no trespassing signs up.

Sorry for the long time in replying. I haven't been checking in here much this year.

I had a tank heater on the little 454 I had and it worked well. For the 684 though, I will just replace what is already there.

Taylor was back around and was trying to get a dealer license again I believe but he has a rocky past so no idea if that will happen or not. If he had something you needed and you made a deal on the spot and could take it away that would be fine but I wouldn't depend on him. Too bad, his father was great to deal with many years ago.

If you do go with a tank heater, this one works and fits good.

Had to replace the one on the 495 and this fit right on the side of the block perfect.

I had heard Taylor was stateside on a "vacation" , sounds like he is back now then.
