On my 38 F20 I was told to shut the engine off to move the lever near the steering wheel all the way up . This moves the back plate on the mag counter clock wise until it stops . Mine keep on running ! Where do I look ? Thanks.

Look inside the point 'chamber'. The points are not being grounded. The little plate probably isnt moveing far enough

Delta Red is correct. I think we both assume you have an F-4 mag. When you take the cover off of the mag point chamber, you should see the points. Now take a screwdriver or a 7/16" wrench and rotate the points plate. You should see an arm that is close to the outside of the point housing. It should move when you rotate the points. This arm should contact a post that is sticking out of the external housing when you rotate the point plate in the counter clockwise direction. If it has been bent up, it will not contact that "grounding" post. You will have to bend that arm down toward the outside of the of the plate to make contact with the grounding post. Then when you turn the mag lever towards the steering wheel support post it will ground out the mag and stop the engine. I'm out on the road and cannot supply you with pictures at this time. Hope this helps.

If you hadnt already check the linkages first. Simple to test. Start it up, mlve the lever all the way, go to the mag and lift up on the
ear the linkage goes into and see if it dies then.

On my F-20s (and all F4 Mags), I drill a small hole in the back of the cover and "sneak" a wire from the condenser thru this hole to a one-prong on/off switch from a letter series mounted near the seat. This will also serve to ground the Mag and kill the engine.

When I had it running Wednesday it wouldn't shut off ! I looked for tab in the point area , but not knowing what to look for , and didn't see one ! When I was cleaning all of the shed fallout from 30 + years inside there was a wire wrapped around the linkage near the oil filter ! Could that be the shutoff to ground the mag ? If so where does it enter the mag ? Thanks .

There is no "Factory" hole. Look for a small hole (or make a small hole) the size of 12 or 14 gauge wire. It should be connected to the condenser inside the mag.
