I just finished reading a post someone else posted about engine identification. I too have a situation I am curious about concerning my M. The numbers on the block are 8 16 B. Obviously not an M engine since it is 1956. I bought it from the parts guy at the IH dealership, and he said it came out of an M. Can anybody venture a guess about which tractor it came out of, and what cubic inch it is? Thanks, Ellis

Just a guess....264 ci from a 400.

Don't know about the M but on my H the tractor serial number is on the aluminum ID plate, but it is also stamped into a raised boss an inch under the No. 1 spark plug. On mime, the numbers agree. But the numbers could tell you the years they were made.

The engine model should be cast into the block just like the casting date code. C248, C264, or C281.

With a B casting code, if it's C248, it's a replacement block. C264 means it could be a transplant from a 400.

Thanks for the input. The tractor is up in Ohio right now getting a 12 volt upgrade. I'll check the rest of the numbers next week. Ellis

Could be different things. If a replacement block they usually have a cover mounted with two bolts near carburetor to seal the fuel pump drive opening. Should have the block casting number above the oil filter near head, sometimes find them ground off on a replacement and numbers hand stamped in. Most original M engines into tractors don't have C-248 on them. Few real real late ones did and some that went into modified M tractors. Making it more confusing IH sold some replacement blocks casting #365586R1 that can be found with C-248 or C-264 or C281 cast on the side. But all the same size block with the 264, 281 size parent bore. Latest date I noticed on those 1967. Can also find a regular M replacement block that usually just has a 4 number cast # ending with D?. If block came out of a production tractor with date code you posted on a 264 or 281 it will have a casting number like in picture. Also notice it should have a serial number stamped in above the breather pipe not below # 1 spark plug. If it has a serial number, 6 numbers long would be a c-264. 3 numbers for a early C-281 casting.
