Farmall or International ?

I've wondered for YEARS, What is the indicator that makes it an International rather than a Farmall? I used to believe that tricycle style were Farmall and standared or wheatland style were Internationals. The 56 series tractors seamed to be Farmall if gear drive and International if Hydro. But that doesnt always prove true ether! Few years ago I saw an 806 that had Farmall on the right aide and International on the left. I assumed THAT was because they couldnt find the correct side panel to replace a damaged one. The shocker was the pic. of a 400 trike with INTERNATIONAL on the side in a recent post!!! Was the Farmall for domestic use and the International for export?? I have 2 IHC history books and I dont remember Ether one mentioning a distinction. CURIOSITY IS KILLING THIS CAT!!!

Farmalls were row crop models and International were standard tread (wheatland) tractors as well as utility and industrial.

The 06 series were the last models to carry the Farmall on the hood....the 56's said International.

The early 66 series were the last tractors to say Farmall on them anywhere....they said Farmall down on the small plate above the 1066, late ones only said International on the hood.

Some of the variations you mention in your post were not factory, but owner add-ons.

Mark, this is not a flame but just trying to help provide accurate information. Your statement about the '06 series being the last with the Farmall name is not correct. We had a 656 Farmall gas which I'm pretty certain was a 1965 model. I have no solid year but I think sometime in the late '60s is when the change to only the International name took place. If you look at the Farmall 656 in tractordata.com is says the last year of the 656 was '73. The photos shown there show the 656 model with both names. (Separate tractors) Now my knowledge only applys to 656 or larger IH tractors, as someone has already replied that a 140 Farmall was available in 1979. I also realize that tractordata is not always 100% accurate.

Depends. As far as the letter series is concerned, you had Farmall - Row crop, McCormick - standards, International - Industrials. I'm sure there are differences for exported tractor, and I'm not 100% on the tractors after the letter series so I wont comment on those.

No problem, I guess I was just thinking about the large frame tractors when I answered.

It was late 73 or 74 when they dropped the Farmall name completely off the 66 series tractors, so that would match up with your 656 timeframes.

We had a neighbor with a 1973 1066 that said Farmall, then one bought a couple years later said only International.

I totally missed the 140, I don't think I've ever seen one but at tractor shows.

My 706 is a McCormick Farmall and so is my 450.

IIRC those are "Farmalls" and McCormick is just the manufacturer, so to speak. International version would have said McCormick International? (Been some time since Ive fooled with the specifics.)

The first 656s were made in 1965 when the 706 and 806 were still in production. Those early 656s had the grill like a 706 and white side panels and the Farmall emblems on the side of the hood. When the 756 and 856 came out the 656 had the chrome grill and red side cowls and it was badged International like the 756 and 856 and 544. So they went from Farmall to International on the hood side when the 756 and 856 and 656 red side came out in 1967.
