HELP! 656 shifter issue and need to snowblow

I have a farmall 656 that is stuck in two gears. I've looked at all the archived forums and see where it says the pins do not lineup. I have my battery cover off and side cow covered, just can't tell exactly what I need to do. The shift lever will not move all the way to the right. The middle rod and the right Rod will go up and down but the rod all the way to the left will not. Maybe a better explanation or God willing a picture from one of you would definitely help. Thanks in advance.

Where is the tractor at? Can you jack up a rear wheel to take the pressure of the drive train? All those levers/rods should be able to move. You may have an internal shift fork detent problem. We had one of those back on the farm 30 years ago. Those shifters can be tricky when they get worn. Best to shift them slow and diliberate. Sorry no picture for you.

If I'm reading your description correctly, It's stuck in 4th/5th. If the shift lever is working on the other two rods, You might be able to get it to line up and get back to neutral. I would also suggest penetrating oil to the shifting mechanism. Something else that might help, If you are in a place where you can, Engage the T/A. That often aided Dad and I in shifting ours.

The problem on that tractor is different from the older ones with the floor shifter.

In the case of something like an M, the "gates" where the nub on the end of the shifter slides into are on the shift forks in the transmission.

On your 656, they're in the shifter mechanism up on the cowl. A series of rods and bellcranks goes down to the transmission and connects to the shift forks.

If there's nothing else wrong, all you need to do is get at the rod for the shifter fork that's stuck in gear and move it to get it centered again.

Try pulling the TA lever back while you hold the clutch pedal down to relieve pressure on the gears.

You need to imagine you are driving an old cab over Ford. Move lever slightly past where you want to go and come back to desired gear. Good FFA project to take linkage apart and replace, drill bigger, rebush the linkage. You cant slide that lever around like a 400 or 450. Even they wear after enough shifts.

I can't help with your immediate issue with being stuck in two different gears but can advise what I was told by a neighbor who was an old time IH tractor mechanic about the way you need to shift gears to eliminate getting the stuck gear issue on these console linkage type shifting IH tractors. I was told when I obtained my Farmall 656 that when shifting between gears (either going up, down or sideways) always to move the shifter into the center neutral position and move the shift lever back and forth to the left and right a couple of times as that puts all the shift rails in the correct neutral position for changing gears. After doing that little back and forth movement trick then move the shift lever to the new gear position and it will easily move into the new selected gear position. I have followed that advice for the past several years and have never been faced with the issue you have presently. Good luck with getting yours unstuck but I believe you will need a bar to force and move one of the shifter linkages out of the stuck position. They are visible above the battery but I have no experience with getting them free once they are stuck like you have presently. Hope this might help in the future to prevent this from happening again, Hal.
