Farmall 400 Bull Pinion Oil Seal Replacement

Hello-

I am helping a friend with his farmall 400. Pulled disc brakes apart today to repair and found that they are all oil soaked. So I need to replace the bull pinion oil seals.

Can someone explain to me how this is done? I have done brakes on my Farmall 450, but the oil seals were good, so I never touched the seals.

Just need to know how to change the oil seals. If you have any pics that would be great. Thanks!

Inside brake disc goes on left side of part on left side of picture and seal is located in it. Has a few pry slots between it and differential carrier housing to pry out. Or screw something in the 5/8 fine thread bolt hole in end of bull pinion shaft like a slide hammer and bring the plate and gear out.

Thanks so much for the picture and advice DSlater. How hard do these normally pry out? I am hoping I can leave the bull pinion gear in the tractor.

If I have to take the gear out with a slide hammer, is it just as simple as pulling it out and putting it back in the tractor?

Part the seal goes in fits pretty close on snout so O ring seals. Needs to come out pretty even. Some will pry out okay but some take enough pressure that you think it won't come out. Yes if gear comes out it will go back in. Replace O ring or make sure it,s okay. Housing on right in picture stays in tractor unless removal of differential or service is needed and then bull gear needs removed from axle first.

I replaced the bull pinion oil seals on my M. Slightly different because of the band brakes versus disk, but basically the same. I had to resort to wrecking the old seals and removing them in pieces. Just not enough available working space to use the screw and slide hammer approach.

I like to wrap the splined end of the bull
pinion that the brakes go on with electrical
tape, so that it doesn't scruff up the new
seal when you put it back together. Once
everything is back in place, you can peel
the tape off. If you decide to do that,
start wrapping from the inside working your
way out, that way you can peel it off
easier.
