Norden front axle

Ok I know I have aftermarket axle. Really wish since doing restoration I had a factory cast that matched tractor but oh well.

2 questions
- are there any later model factory wide front that will fit or line up correctly?

- it appears I can elongate mounting holes and slide this backwards about an inch. Might be able to then remove enough of the angle iron to match front. Any reason I shouldn't try this?

Thanks

It looks like a stout axle. If you need assurance that it is Ok, in most shows and displays, period accessories like axles, weights, throttle levers, and governors are features that add interest. I think the radius arms are on the wrong side. The spindle upright and the pivot point of the tierod have a theoretical line passing through them. this line should pass through the center of the rear axle. Ackerman Steering geometry.
Source and pictures.

I have a Norden on a Super H. A front from a 300/350 will bolt up.On an M,any wf from 400/450 will fit up to 1256 .My Norden(and the Swartz on the SuperM) will each turn much tighter than the 'factory'H/M front. You can set it back, but the geometry will change, causeing a difference in steering radious.Maybe tighter, maybe not. I wouldn't mess with it. Leave it alone.

Thanks. I would not have noticed the arms but I see what you mean. It actually drives really good and the tow seems pretty good. Although it might turn better if they both turned same. I'll have to look at that.

The nameplate says Norden made in Russell Kansas. Mashburn Manufacturing. Can't quite read serial num.

Knowing what might fit helps. I'm fine with it as is just wondering about improvement when I take it all off.
I know where a IH is for parts. I'm not sure what model it is but its newer style than M. Square front hood, has same looking rear wheels as M and a front end with a cast piece that is shaped to fit piece above. I had wondered if it would fit. Im at least going to investigate. Who know I might end up with another IH to restore.

Thanks. And yes I had considered changes in geometry. It just looks like it is positioned odd now. Probably because it was a universal front.

I am not quite sure what you mean that the radius arms are on the wrong side. I have an IH 400 with the same Norden axle and from the picture it looks the same. The mounting points on mine also look like they might be on the wrong side, but they must have come that way from the factory. My dad purchased my 400 in 1966 with axle installed. Al

I looked again at the radius arms. I'll eventually take apart to know if the location of a key way or something on the shaft will allow them to be swapped. I'm sure someone knows. But if I did swap them to where the angled towards the tractor instead of away from tractor my tie rods would be way to long. Very little adjustment to shorten now. So unless they have been replaced this may be the way it came.

Thanks. Will keep it in mind.

Square grill could be 560,706 or other. The newer factory IH wf used a cast pivot to bolt to the tractor. On the Norden on the SH,when makeing a tight turn, the tire on the 'inside' will turn almost 90degrees from straight ahead. And you are correct. The Norden,Swartz,Speeco are universal fronts to fit a multitude of tractor makes/madels.The angle iron mounts are pretty easy to make/modify to fit about anything.

They would be correct if the rods were in front of the axle! Look at the diagram and info in the link. Jim

I'm not sure what you mean about being correct if in front of axle. It's not possible for them to be in front but I understand the thought behind the angle. I had never seen content before in the link. That's really neat and something to be aware of. Thanks for sharing that.

The 'old style' factory IH wd front had tierods in the front. That style was used from the F-20 up to the super M. The later styles and aftermarket(Norden/Swartz) were much better fronts.
