Farmall 400 value

I'm looking at a good looking old 400 with a wide front don't know if
it's a IH or aftermarket yet, the torque is out and the pto is out...
so what is a good way to haggle a little on those items being out?
there's a little work to fixing those things and $$$ too, tractor looks
great, straight sheet metal good rears and New front tires, and comes
with what looks like a IH pipe loader...
thanks to all

Torque Amplifier is in the 700 category Plus labor. And if you put a clutch in it (why not) more like $1K. The PTO is a unknown due to the several points on it that could be toast, from an easy fix if the seasonal disconnect is disconnected, to bad planetary gears in the unit. hopefully an adjustment will make it work. Jim

thanks Jim, that's about what I figured on a TA that and a good complete clutch job...I'm hoping it's a band job,on the PTO you helped me a bunch on that job and the hole in my hyd strainer on my 300 utility...
he's not asking too terrible much, just the old girl needs a little work and I'd love to give it good happy home

Very few you find for sale have a working TA and they are usually priced accordingly. You didn't say if it had power steering, fast hitch or hydraulic dump on the loader...those all affect value. However, in my area I would expect about a $2200 asking price based off what you have said about it.

tractor does have power steering, looks like a converted 3 pt hitch and the loader is a trip bucket, doesn't want to separate the loader though, I have a hyd bucket loader for it..

The last TA job that I did cost 1300 +/-. That was me taking it out and taking to the shop. He just told me its around 1600 +/- now. That's taking the TA section out and taking it to him. TA unit clutches and tractor clutch and labor. That's Leamens in Pa. Very good work. In my opinion your better off spending more money and get one done. Your going to have more money in the tractor then its worth.

A complete remanufactured standard TA unit is $630 from Abeline Machine.

400Dtractorman did you use the "center housing TA service" offered by Leaman's? You take your TA housing out of the tractor and take it to them, and they rebuild it while you wait. That service is $1995 for a large-frame hydraulic TA tractor, so $1300-$1600 sounds about right for a small frame mechanical TA tractor.

If you had it done to a large frame hydraulic TA for $1300, you got a deal.
