48 H running issues

I purchased a 1948 H that was stuck. Somebody had rewired it for a key and solenoid on the starter. I removed all of those components and put all of the wiring back to the original six volt. Replaced the starter switch replaced the ignition switch and replaced the light switch. I also replaced any bad or frayed wires and gave them all good connections. I have plenty of spark to the plugs and the starting motor cranks over great. The problem lies in the fact that the tractor will only run with the starter switch depressed. We've gone over the wiring about a half-dozen times and can't figure out why we are losing power after the starter switch is depressed. Anyone ever run into this issue? If so any help would be great! Thanks!

Sounds like the wire that feeds power from the starter switch to the ignition, lights, etc. is on the wrong starter switch terminal. It belongs on the large lug with the cable that comes from the battery.

I have only two wires coming off the starter switch. One to the negative terminal and the other to the starter. Should there be more? My h manual doesn't call for one. Thanks.

Ignition wire has to be on the same post on the starter switch as the battery side is or it will do just what it is doing. One side of the starter button should go to the starter and the other side should have the battery cable and ignition wire on it. If the ignition wire is on the starter side of the button it will start with the button down but die when you let off of the button

The amp meter had a battery side and a load side. The Load side hooks to the generator(Bat) wire, the ignition switch, and lights through a fuse. The Battery side of the amp meter hooks to the negative (non- grounded output of the battery, usually by being connected to the starter switch on the terminal that is directly connected to the big wire from the negative battery terminal. The wire is usually 10 gauge with a big ring connector on the end to go over the big switch post. If hooked to the opposite side, the tractor will start but quit as soon as the starter switch is released (no voltage there when the switch is in the released position. Jim

Thank you guys for all the help. Got her fired up after sitting for 10 years! It was missing a wire that I overlooked on the wiring daigram. Your help led me to the answer.
