I know the shaft is way loose in there. But that gear, is that wear on it to look like that? I kind of think so.

This is what it does when rocking it back in forth while it's in 5th. There is actually more up and down movement on that shaft then that.

Can't be sure looking at picture, but the gears not perfect look to still be serviceable. Looks like a bearing bad inside the input shaft gears. Top shaft with gear that drives the differential has the roller bearing on end that goes inside input shaft at your picture location. Input shaft bearings may be loose also. Lucky when you don't find something wrong inside when opened up on those rears.

Should have mentioned they're probably readily available from IH.

I went through the trans on an H this last summer and I was surprised at how many parts are still available from IH. A parts man at our local CIH dealer even had a top cover gasket in stock.

The video does not even show all the play in the shaft, it has at least twice as much as it shows. I guess that means it has to be split.

Our other M is in the splitting stands. Needed new rod and main bearings. Got the parts in this past week so it can go back together.

I guess that means it has to be split.

I think you can do the pilot without a split, but it is not much of a job to split it and check everything in there.

Transmission parts can be removed without splitting tractor. Should be lots of old posts on how. Need to also check condition of the internal teeth on 4th and 5th slider gear. Picture shows internal teeth. Other picture shows main shaft with pilot bearing.

Thanks guys! I didn't realize it could be fixed without splitting.

Not sure what we'll find once we take the top cover off. The way this thing keeps giving us surprises. lol
I know one thing for sure, this old tractor has been around the block a time or 2!
