Farmall 350 / Direct Start Diesel??

Got a lead on a 350, it is for sure a Farmall 350, I know that much. The owner tells me it was given to him a few years back, and it was running at that point. BUT, the previous owner told him that once it got warmed up to temp, it would die, and not restart until it cooled back down? He was going to work on it, but retired from farming, and moved, and gave the tractor to this other guy (a friend of mine) who hasn't done anything with it.

I thought he was talking about the IH Engines, that start on Gas, and then run on Diesel. But the other night on the phone, he tells me that it is a little uncommon. He said that he doesn't know a lot about them, but that it was a FACTORY option to have a 40 horse, 4cyl Continental Diesel engine in it? Direct start. Is that true?

Tractor is said to be factory with this engine, power steering, wide front, and a Fast Hitch. Nothing was said about trans, or a possible T/A?

Is there such a thing as a 350 with a Continental, and if so, is it rare? What is it worth? Needs rear tires, and a lot of little misc work. And then of course what ever is wrong with the engine. I am looking at it for a working tractor for myself, and then possibly sell one of the M's. Bryce

Yes, the 350 had a diesel engine option and it was a Continental. It is a energy cell combustion system, much like Case and Moline used in their engines before they went to direct injection. Different from pre cup engines like the gasoline start IH diesels and 560's etc, but still not direct injection. Spendy to repair, even 50 years ago.

Yes a GD193 engine. Some lasted and worked okay but in general not a truly successful engine. Light built for a diesel engine. If checking look for a cracked block below head and try to determine if the head is cracked. Had 4 of them in the past and three had cracked heads, some welded before. Maybe 4 cracked heads, never had one off. Good power in a 350 if running right. Ones equipped with a working preheater in the intake helps with cold starts.

We had one in the 60's. Pulled 3-16 plow with it.It did break a crank shaft and when the dealer went to fix it found out it had a cracked head.

Dad had one on the farm years ago, was not the best starter compared to the MF 65 Dieselmatic he had at the time. Continental GD 193 is not fun to find parts for either..

If you are still thinking of coming down Sunday you can look at one in person to see what you might be getting into.

Sounds like the general consensus is to stay away from it as a working tractor huh? Unless the price is right, I will do just that. I want a good reliable diesel, still leaning towards a Ford 4000. Thanks!
