going to look at a 1951 cub lowboy, from the serial number the owner gave me, his dads tractor it hasnt run in a couple years, now it wont start, 6v positive ground, he says it has intermittent fire, in guessing either something like a bad ground, dirty switch or bad points and condenser in the mag, any other ideas, hes not a tractor guy and im trying to arm myself with ideas in order to spend no more time with it than i have to

When you say intermittent fire is that based on watching a spark or listening to the tractor. If its listening to the tractor it could be a fuel issue. If it were a ground issue the tractor wouldn't crank and if its a mag it doesn't matter. I would make sure the points are in good shape then check the fuel. If there is a plug in the carb then remove it and let gas run for a few minutes.Should have a good stream the whole time. If you don't have a plug then at least remove the fuel line from the carb and see if it runs gas OK for a while.Has anybody had the mag apart working on it and maybe got it back on wrong. Was the tractor running OK before it was parked.
