super c distributor cap to hydrolic line clearance

I have a 51 super c that currently has a prestolite distributor the cap plug terminal is up against the hydolic line when I have the timing set correctly . this is causing the rotor to contact the inside part of the terminal. I think this distributor is taller than it should be I have dimensions . was wondering if anyone could tell me the dimensions of the units sold by yesterday's tractor part number 107304c91 specifically the distance from were it meets the engine to the top of the cap terminal

The Prestolite dist is a horizontal dist just like the I-H And rotating the body doesent move it closer
to the HY lines. The prestolite cap does not interchange with a Delco or the I-H.

Don't know if you thought about it or if it would be possible to take it out and turn it a notch or two so you could rotate the cap some so it would give you more clearance, don't know if that would do it, just a thought, good luck.

Have you figured out that turning the dist at the base instead of moving at the gov housing will solve your problem. You must haVE A Delco and not a prestolite dist . Delco is the only one that stands up the others lay down and will not cause the problem you say it does.

the distibutor does not stand up it is horizontal and the terminal on the cap is up against the hydrolic lines
I am looking for dimensions on distributors sold by yesterdays tractors that would fit the super c considering going to electronic ignition also . If some one could provide that info it would be helpful

The tractor is a 1951, and I'll assume the distributor is original to the tractor? If so, why is there a clearance issue now?

Prestolite is not original to the tractor. It should have an IH distributor. The Prestolite was a popular replacement option when the original distributor wore out.

The Prestolite distributor is a little longer and a lot bigger around than the IH distributor. That is why it is hitting the hydraulic lines.

Actually, the Prestolite was an option for replacing the magneto. It IS possible that a Super C would have originally been equipped with a magneto from the factory, but not likely.

However, none of that explains why the Prestolite distributor was working just fine for 65 years, but now it has a clearance issue?

I don't know what the tooth count is on the distributor drive shaft or the gear on the distributor shaft, but it is more than 4. Somebody pulled it apart then reinstalled it with the teeth meshed differently. Note the OP said "cap plug terminal is up against the hydolic line when I have the timing set correctly". All he has to do is pull the distributor out, turn it a tooth or two and put it back. Then the towers of the cap will be in a different spot when he has "the timing set correctly".

This assumes he has the timing set correctly.
