alternator issues

I have an old 44 H it was converted to 12 volt so it has an alternator the person I got it from could not keep it from running the battery flat so they put a battery cut off on it I would like to get it to work correctly and when I turn the disconnect on you can heard the alternator get power it makes a clunk noise like a magnet is getting power. Not sure what brand of alternator so any ideas on where to check and how to wire it so as to not need the disconnect. thanks for your help

There is a diode that can stop the bleed/back feed. It works like a one waycheck valve. Not sure if you can just buy and install one,or if you need an alternator with one built in. Or you can put a on/off toggle switch in the system to 'disconect' the (one wire) alt.Question: does the tractor continue to run(refuse to stop) after the engine is shut off?Somebody more knoledgeable than me will chime in.LOL

yes if I shut the disconnect off it will still run It has a toggle switch to power the points so it will run until I shut that switch off and it is not a one wire alternator

From what your saying it has the excite circuit direct wired to the battery so the alternator never powers down so that will drain the battery plus also shorten the life of the alternator by a lot. You really need to find out what brand the alternator is so maybe we can help you help your self. Not all alternators are wired the same so the brand can make a big difference as to how to wire it correctly

Does it look like this alternator? This is a typical older GM alternator. A lot of times, with one ignition switch, an alternator will back feed the ignition, so you can't shut the engine off. If you wire the excite wire, directly to the battery or ammeter, it will cause issues like you describe. So, if you have ignition switch, you will need to put a light bulb (idiot light) or a diode in line to the excite terminal to prevent that from happening. Or, some people just put a separate switch for the excite circuit, works, but looks crude. Once the engine is running, power on has to be applied once to the excite circuit to get the alternator to charge, it doesn't have to continously have power to it. You could also use a push button just to supply the juice to excite it, or an oil pressure switch the closes when oil pressure comes up. I use the oil pressure switch and a diode quite often. If I can make it look good, or like it belongs there, I put in an indicator light.

3 wire alternators do go bad and drain the battery. If it it is a Delco 10 SI rebuild kits are cheap, and easy to do if you have a little mechanical ability.
