Gas tank inside coating.

Has anyone had good luck coating the inside of a gas tank? The tank on my H looks pretty bad. I would like to drain clean and coat it with something good. Thanks Al71

I've used Kreem and Redkote. So far they are both holding up well. After using both, I much prefer and would recommend the Redkote. Get the tank clean and dry! Take your time and follow the directions.

as IAtractorkid stated, get the inside clean. I use Caswell epoxy tank coating. It is a wee bit expensive, but it wears like iron and will actually fill small holes up to 1/8" without any additional repair work.

I have heard that Redkote and Kreem are both good, but I have never used them.

I had major issues with the fuel tank on my Farmall 240 and with a couple references to a radiator shop in the St. Louis, MO area doing the clean and seal work I took mine there. Cost was about $125 which included all the chemicals, Red Kote and labor. Needed it for a week or so but seems to be working great, no leaks and no "crud" in the system. I believe just the cost of the materials would have been half of that for an inexperienced person to even have given it an attempt. They returned the tank primed and ready for paint. I thought is was a very reasonable fee since they also had the expertise, materials, facilities and the time to do it right, Hal.

So far I have coated 3 fuel tanks with Red-Kote with compete success. The key is the inside of the tank has to be CLEAN and DRY otherwise the sealer will not stick, and then the sealer must be allowed to fully cure before putting gas in the tank.

I used Red-Kote myself on a Farmall H gas tank after having it boiled out, and the stuff worked great. Follow the directions, slosh it around real good, and upside down and all around, top and bottom, and pour out the excess, let it drip out, let it dry over a few days, AND DO NOT TRY TO PUT A DOUBLE-COAT INSIDE. Save the stuff in a fruit jar, and for a whie you can coat tools, tool handles, screw-drivers,e tc. with a nice red.
I did notiice the fuel that came out, was a slight red tint for a few tankfuls. No bother.

No.

Farmall tanks are hard to clean, and harder to coat. Any liner I have had experience with has had a failure at one point or another and then the tank is junk. You are time and money ahead to let the fuel do the cleaning, install a standpipe in the tank and a filter in the sediment bowl, and plan on cleaning both at each oil change.

This sounds bad and like a lot of work, but it is better than having the liner come apart and having to try and find another fuel tank and match a paint job.

The coatings if put in right will most likely out last you. I lined a tank on a f-20 over thirty years ago( don't remember the name of the product used at that time ) but the coating has not come loose but has change color with age and is still holding. The main thing about coating a tank is get it clean & dry. The last tanks I did were done with Red-Kote.The coatings we got today are probably a lot better than the product of 30 years ago.

Thanks for all of the replies and info about gas tank coatings. I will seek out the materials and set forth a plan.. Thanks Al71

My advice would be: Take the gas tank to a radiator shop and have it done professionally. They will completely submerge your tank and make it bright and shiny on the inside, flush repeatedly, and then dry before the coating. I have never regretted spending the money for this treatment. Oh, there will be no paint on the outside either, you will have to get it repainted. Ellis
