I have a 986 in the shop that the park pawl is broken. I was wondering if someone could give me an idea of what is involved in making the repair. I don't do a lot of IH work, the I&T manual I have doesn't cover replacing the park pawl. The shift linkage on this tractor is typical of console shifter with this much age, and needs repairing too. I have the floor pan and seat pan out. have disconnected the linkage and the park pawl is down which is engaged, and the tractor moves. thanks

I think you're almost there. If I'm not mistaken the parking pawl is attached to the range transmission cover.

The hard part will be fishing the broken piece out of the bottom of the range transmission.

If the reverse gear was also damaged, that's major surgery. The reverse gear is the last one to come out of the range transmission, and I think you have to pretty much disassemble the entire tractor to get to it.
