static timing

engine is kicking back on starter. so i tried to static time the farmall 130 today. brought up compression on # 1 and then rotated engine to TDC on pulley. removed distributor cap and rotor button is pointing to # 4 tower and not # 1. so i thought ah ha, this is an easy fix, (lol) so i moved the plug wires (# 1 wire going to # 4) and got backfire. whew. moved wires back to original and loosened distributor, retarded timing and it started some better.

? ? ? why is the rotor button not pointing to # 1 tower of the distributor? could it be that pulley mark and T D C on # 1 of the engine are not in sync with each other?

i would guess someone pulled the distributor out and put it back in wrong. set the crankshaft back on tdc, pull the distributor and re-install with the rotor lining up on #1.

If when mount magneto, the distributor is set to number 1 cylinder at TDC, then the manual says do ONE turn of the crank to TDC which means that number 4 cylinder is now at top of compression stroke so the distributor should actually now be pointing to number 4 cylinder. Firing order is 1 3 4 2 so that cylinders 1 and 4 are alternatively at top when TDC pointer is in line. Numbers 2 and 3 cylinders are at TDC when pointer is 180 degrees out.

You may have had #1 on the exhaust stroke instead of compression and that would have the rotor pointing to #4

a friend of mine, came and we investigated. brought # 1 up on tdc (he put wire inside cylinder and felt of piston), checked rotor button, it was in the correct place to fire; timing marks on pulley are not in proper place. hmmm

unreasonable to believe that pulley is on wrong, or can it be?

More then likely the distributor has been pulled then set back in 180 out which would cause that

When I changed the pionts on my 300U I follow what a lot of guys on here are telling you. Now I did start with an engine that was correct. Gently turn the fan blade clockwise "I think this sounds right" till I got the rotor exactly on the center of the #1 timeing mark on the ridge of the distributor. Lossen the bolt and clamp and pull the dist. Change and set the points and maybe the condenser. LOTS of folks say if it is still working don't change it. Lube the oil pad "I use an HVAC product called turbine oil in a neat little spout bottle". Add a little red grease behind the cam for the breaker. Throw a little oil down 5he shaft and then slide her back in so you have the #1 wire at about the 2 o'clock posithion. ALSO check your time mark and pointer line up perfectly. I use an air chuck into the plug hole to make sure you are in the #1 position. SURE lets you know if you are not! Blows back through the carb or exhaust. One more thought to ponder. Check and see if you distributer shaft is getting loose. Bushings can wear. See what the guys say.

got some experience on this one. i am embarassed. i was using first btdc mark as tdc. so friend came and he got me straightened out on that. found tdc and rotor button was on # 1 tower. but, marks on pulley did not align up with this. ? ? ? so we were going to use timing light, but , obviously could not.

motor is starting and running, so i will leave it for a while and move on to next project.
