Recently bought a non running 47 H. Got it running good, but now the transmission pops out of 4th gear. It is a little noisy in fourth, but the rest are
quiet. What am I in for now?

If it is popping out of gear, I bet it has something to do with a loose or broken shifter fork on the top of the transmission. The noisy part is either worn bearings, or if in just one gear and not the others, then it is probably from wear on the toothed surfaces of that gear (was probably used the most).

Pull the Belt pulley (or the cover where it is located if it had one) and you will see the 4th 5th slider clearly. It could be a bad detent ball and spring in the shift rail, or it could be a bent /worn shift fork, or a bad gear (and matching gear on the counter shaft). Grinding into 4th from road gear has been know to be common. It mangles the leading teeth edges and rears the tooth shape to make it more and more likely to pop out. Jim

I didn't realize you could go in from that area to get to it. Good tip Jim!

The pilot bearing in the transmission is severely worn or failed.
As Jim says, pull the belt pulley/cover and you can see the gear end of the input shaft and 4th sliding gear. In a new one there would be virtually no radial play between the input shaft and main shaft.
With the cover off, shift into 4th and then pry lightly on the end of the main shaft. You'll know right away if that's the source of the trouble.

The 4th to 5th sliding gear is about 1/3 ground off and the inner splines are very sloppy. Thinkin that the gear is the problem.

Replace the pilot (Intermediate) bearing as well it is very likely worn as well. Replacing the 4th gear on the countershaft is also important. Wear on the slider is wear on the countershaft. Make sure the detents and shift forks are good while it is apart. Jim

This is why my 44 H pops out of fourth. I might replace that gear someday but its not on my priority list for now. For now Ill just 1,2,3 and 5th. The 4-5 sliding gear actually wobbles on the shaft too. That's because when it started popping out of fourth gear, they started holding it in gear with their hand, then their foot. At some point it got too difficult to hold it in fourth while towing a tobacco rack full of tobacco and gave me the tractor.

Got the tractor split and the top cluster out. How does the lower one come out? Looks like more stuff has to come apart in the rear end.
