International 1586

Question on the 86 series tractors. Someone told me that the 1976 year models was the only ones that had the black stripe on the side. They told me that IH was trying to use up the 66 parts so the 1976 86 models had 66 parts in them and had the black stripe. Any truth to this? Is that just for the 66 series or does that include the 86 series also. Does the 86 series have the black strip for only one year? I found a 1586 with a black stripe and didnt know if it was rare or not. I wish I could find a good International book with production information in it. Anyway any help would be appreciated.

Black strip other than the one on the white portion? Never seen any like it. We had a '76 1086 and I don't recall it looking any different than my '77 886.

That's odd, because my understanding was they were using 86 series parts on the 66 series tractors in 1976.

Also, what do you mean by "black stripe?" If you mean the hockey-stick that goes up over the hood, I personally have never seen an 86 series with that, and never heard of one. My guess is that if you have seen one, it is a custom paint job.

As far as a book with production information, it would be several feet tall, but the fact of the matter is not even IH knew what they were producing at the time, because they didn't care, and didn't feel it was important. They had no idea that details about what parts were used on what tractor when would be such a contentious issue 40 years down the road. All they wanted to do was crank out tractors and rake in money.

The black stripe 66 series were a transition time to the 86 series.
Through the year bits and pieces showed up on the tractors that would be standard parts on 86 series production. It wasn't so much using up the 66 series parts as a phasing in of the new parts.

One of the more noticeable item was the bosses on the rear axle housings that the rear cab mounts would bolt to.

Anthony76,

Reading this again and thinking about it more, I think you might be confusing the "black stripe 66" (SIXTY-six) series with the 86 series tractors.

Like someone else said, the late 1975 through 1976 "black stripe 66" series tractors were a transition to the 86 series. The black stripe paint scheme was indeed only available for approximately one year, on the 66 series.

All 86 series had a black stripe, but no "hockey stick" extending up over the top of the hood.

Thanks You guys have been a big help. So the black strip 66 series that last year they made it was the one were the stripe went up over the hood.

Jim Naden covered it!
