Painting up the farmall

I'm getting close to putting some lipstick on my Super M. I've restored a few farmall a before. Some complete disassembly, cleaning to bare metal, priming, hardening paint, clear coat, etc. I have never been completely satisfied with the paint or process. So in polling to see what I'm missing.

What type of final prep or wipe down do you use?

What type primer?

What brand farmall color paint?

What color on rims? I've used silver and galvanized.

Thanks guys. This is the fun part.

H Farmall, won first prize at several Christmas parades;
Remove rust and old paint, as best as I could, sandblast, scrape, sandpaper, etc.
Prime with whatever red primer I could find, various kinds in spray cans. [Don't have a spray gun.]
Paint several coats of spray can Case-IHC B14566 or whatever that number is, not the 50, not the 2150.
Rims the same paint for the centers, Rustoleum Hammered Aluminum spray cans for the rims, looks just like galvanized.

depends on your budget and painting skills. here is an m i painted for a customer. expoy prime, 2k powerfill primer in RM, then 3 coats of napa crossfire single stage urethane. shot in the downdraft booth here at my body shop. about 900 dollars in materials.

the color is i-h 2150, the rims are done in a gm cadillac ralleye wheel color, in base/clear

PPG Omni products
Farmall tractors
Epoxy primer on everything
Surfacer 182 over the epoxy treated sheet metal, not needed on cast.
MTK acrylic urethane on the cast similar to IH 2150, but modified to remove too much orange.
MBC Base and MC clear on the sheet metal because it can be sanded and buffed needed because my building has too much lint, etc.
Silver on the rims, also MTK.

I did this one with rattle can. First picture is right after it was done and second is taken 5 years latter.

I'm betting he doesn't work cheap. $900 in materials, and you typically double or triple the materials cost for labor... So you're looking at $2700-$3600 for a paint job on an $800 tractor.

Who cares? If he wants to pay it let him. I believe Glen is somewhere near Yorkville, IL.

the final bill on the m was right around 3850 for paint and material. included dis-assembly and media blasting loose parts, mechanically stripping chassis, dismount old tires, sandblast prep and mount customer supplied new tires and tubes. customer purchased all parts. any mechanical work was done prior to the arrival of tractor to my shop. (ie seals gaskets ect). owner does show the tractor. i am in yorkville il. you can check our shop out on our website at yorkvilleautobody dot com, we also have a facebook site. i had this tractor at my shop about 5 months.

Who cares? Probably the guy who wants glennster to paint his tractor, who may well not be aware that glennster does it for a living and expects to make a profit on the job.
