John T,
i have six 6 volt generators. trying to get 3 working. i have done quite a bit of work. changed armatures and fields, until i have one working and i
am sure of another good armature. so 2 good armatures and one good field, so far.
put armature in field (case) , place on tractor, run tractor, remove from tractor, etc. lots of work. lol

how to test armatures, fields and brushes without doing lots more work? i have multimeter.

To test an armature. you need what is called a growler. It is a magnetic tester that generates electricity in the armature by laying it in a V shaped field with AC current running through it. This makes it a realistic evaluation of insulation, and connections internal to the unit. All segments of the commutator willhave conductivity to one another and none to ground (the shaft) Jim

You could just do the "motor test" on the assembled generators. Then you can just test them on the bench.

The motor test is detailed in John T's famous generator troubleshooting guide.

LIke Professor Jim noted, a growler is a REAL armature test while there are still some things you can do.

Use an ohm meter on low ohms range or a continuity tester to verify there are no shorts from any commutator bars to the steel shaft BECAUSE THAT MEANS ITS BAD/SHORTED....Lo0k for signs of burned or melted solder or wires to the commutator segments THATS BAD

Fields need to be a continuous circuit especially where the 2 splice in the middle with NOOOOOOO shorts to case from any field windings, that's why they are insulated. The circuit is from the external insulated FLD post to and thru both windings (spliced in middle) then to the ARM on a 2 brush unit. NO SHORTS TO CASE FRAME but remember if the arm and brushes are in place its like a short to everything as the one brush is grounded

MOTOR TEST if it passes the spin test with FLD grounded the arm and brushes are at least decent and if it spins faster when FLD is ungrounded the fields are likely good and usuaklly if it passes BOTH tests it should charge
