I'm thinking about putting electronic ignition on my Cub 184. What a pain it is to do anything with the points on that tractor. Not much room to to the oil filter, mower makes it difficult so I started taking off the distributor to put in points.Back side clamp bolt is hard to restart. I'm thinking electronic ignition would eliminate the problem for a long time. I have a 12 volt system with a 6 volt coil and a resistor. Do I still use the resistor and 6 volt coil or would I need a 12 volt coil and no resistor. I've never made one of these changes or know anyone that has. How does such a unit know when to fire?
 
The coil is OK as is, dont splurge for the hot coil, it is useless on a cub. The System has a new 12v supply to make it work, follow the directions carefully (not hard, just important) and it will work. Good idea. Jim
 
You can use the coil and resistor you have or get a coil made for 12V, will make no difference.

Do NOT install the resistor for the EI power, it should go to coil connection.
 
See my post on the 350 electronic ignition. I love mine. Be sure to follow the instructions as the wiring at the coil and distributor is routed totally different then the points. Use the regular coil. The Pertronix rep told me I did not need it and he was sure correct!
 
to reiterate what was said below, follow instructions explicitedly. get correct unit for your system, ie 12 v neg/or pos however you are set up. If you have a question contact pertronix, they are good to work with and better to do that then fry something. they are easy to install and work good
 
The original coil on the 184 LoBoy is a 12 volt no resistor. The resistor on the alternator prevents the alternator from feeding the coil when you turn the key off. The alternator resistor is optional with an idiot light or diode.
