static timing or use a timing light?

i have a 130 farmall. i tried to hand crank it once, never again. it kicked me like a young mule. whew. it hurt me.

i do not mind it idling rough, i want power when tractor is pulling. which timing method is best?

The static timing (stopped) should be TDC, or a tiny (one degree) after TDC. The engine is timed this way to eliminate the chance of what happened to you when cranking it by hand. When running the timing is automatically adjusted by internal distributor parts called cantrifugal advance. This mechanism uses weights and springs (like a governor) to advance the timing fro all engine speeds between idle, and full throttle high RPM. To do this requires that the weights and springs and the pivot points for their motion, be free to move and the tension is accurate. Pivot points for the weights, and weak springs are often points of concern. The system is located behind the breaker mounting plate and is not complex. the curve it provides is way important for smooth operation and fuel economy. Rebuilt distributors are available, and need to be for the specific tractor model and year. The timing curves are very different across engines and tractors even if the distributors look the same and have the same points and other parts. Jim

Well, your timeing should be set correctly whether hand cranking or not. There are ways to hand crank in a way that you won't get hurt if there should happen to be a kick back. Not sure which is your problem.

If it kicked that means it too far advanced are you sure the wires are correct take the cap off and chech the rotor is at the tower when #1 is at TDC.That engine will start easy with a crank if things are in time.

The engine will probably perform better with the initial set 4 BTDC, but I would never try to hand crank it that way.

I am not familiar with that model, but if you can, use the "Twisted Belt" method to start a tractor after repairs. It is easier and safer!
