Farmall 656--starter solenoid going bad?

My 656 gas tractor has had starter problems lately. I press the starter button, the starter solenoid clicks, but the starter won't turn over. I have to do it 3 or 4 times and then suddenly the starter spins and starts the engine.

Once the starter engages, it spins the engine at full speed, so I don't think the battery has a problem.

Could this be a problem with the starter solenoid? Is it hard to replace? Or do I need a new starter? Thanks for any advice!

On Delco starter solenoids one side of the bolt head inside the cap will wear away over time causing the trouble you describe. It may help to turn the bolt 1/2 turn so the unworn area comes into play. Remove the battery ground cable, then remove the battery hot cable end at the solenoid bolt and any other wires on the bolt. Now loosen the bolt nut about four turns, push bolt in and turn it 1/2 turn and pull it back out. Bolt has square shoulder like a carriage bolt. Tighten the nut, replace the wires and cable, and the battery ground. If bolt has not been turned before solenoid should work like new, and will not need replaced.

Wanted to let you know I applied your fix and it worked! Thanks so very much for the suggestion---would never have figured it out by myself.
