Adding volt meter to Cub.

I purchased a 12 volt conversion from
Yesterday's Tractor and I want to put a volt
meter on instead of an amp meter. What's the
best way to do this? I have a distributor. I
would like to use the wiring harness that
came with the kit and not have to butcher it
up. They make a very nice wire harness. The
harness has a wire that runs from the
alternator to the amp meter then another one
that runs from the amp meter to the starter.
Can I put these two together on the + side
of the volt meter and then ground the -
side? Or is that going to drain my battery?

Thanks,
Jeff

Why not have both. Either way hook the volt meter to ground and the ignition side of the ignition switch. That way it will not drain the battery. Most volt meters are very high resistance and would take many moons to drain the battery. A few milliamps is irrelevant unless left for months at a time with no maintainer on it. Jim

The amp meter is broke so I just figured that I would put in a volt meter since I'm converting it anyways. I have to connect the two wires behind the gauges somehow so I was just trying to figure out how the easiest way without cutting up the new harness. The best way would be to run a wire directly from the bat terminal on the alternator to the starter lug. But I'll have to tear apart the harness or leave wires hanging and just run a new wire. I realize it's not original anymore but I would still like it to look decent.

There is a good reason to use the opportunity you have to put a high current fuse in the circuit where the amp gauge was. This can be the solution. I would recommend a fuse with spade connections that is 5 amps larger in rating than the alternator can produce. This prevents meltdown in the case of misconnection, or alt failure. It is simple. If the fuse is wiretied to the inside and the connections are shrink tube covered, it will be fine Wire the volt meter as described earlier in my post. Jim
