McCormick Deering WD9 starting after 5 yrs

well it was a nice fall day, decided to try and get the WD9 home today......I have diesel coming out the injectors, I cracked the lines..........have white smoke, but no fire......once in a while it will hit a couple of times......pulled it around......have a manual and don't understand which way the levers are suppose to be for diesel......I tried them seems like all ways.......finally decided on the left one pushed forward and the right one pushed forward by the brake pedal....

still no luck running just smoke........

what am I doing wrong and how do you turn it off when your are finished? HELP

How old is your tractor? The old ones had the levers one way the later ones used the levers the other way. For diesel fuel on in later tractors the left lever is all the way down with the throttle lever down just a bit to run a slower speed

Are they like an MD where you advance the throttle with the decompression lever in gas and it will bump the decompression lever out of gas? That would be a way to determine where the levers go.

I think on my 650 the throttle is in the up position on gas, once the lever to switch to diesel is pulled the throttle lever should come down.

Forgot to mention the diesel engine need to be warmed up before it starts on diesel. White smoke could be water in the cylinders?

Are you trying to start it on gas cycle or diesel cycle? To start on gas you need to have the left lever (De-compression Lever) up and right lever (Diesel Throttle Lever) up, ignition switch on and choke pulled out. Once it runs on gas, push choke back in as required for it to run. After a couple of minutes of running, push both levers down. This puts the diesel on compression and opens the diesel throttle. Adjust throttle for the speed you want it to run.

Now if you are trying to pull start it on diesel cycle, put the left lever down and the throttle up, diesel injection off. Pull the tractor for a few minutes to get some heat in the cylinders. Then push throttle down, you should get white smoke and maybe the tractor will run on diesel. You might have to pull the tractor several minutes or up to a 1/4 mile to get enough heat for it to start on diesel.

To turn off the diesel, push the throttle up and engine will stop as this stops the fuel from being injected. Now if you tractor runs on the gas cycle, you can also push the left compression lever up and diesel throttle lever up and it should run on gas. Then turn off the ignition. Some folks like me turn off the gas before stopping and then let the tractor run out of gas. But once tractor stops, then always put the decompression lever down so the gas valves are seated.

I have a 650 diesel and I believe the levers work exactly the same as I did have a WD9 before I got the 650. I also have an MD and 450-D but those levers work differently. Hope this helps.

well if your pulling it and its smoking white that is a good thing... as it will take at least 1/2 mile of pulling till it fires up. that is just what they do till enough heat is produced to make the deisel explode. that is why you need it running on gas to warm the engine first.some guys give it sniffs of starting fluid while pulling. but im not a fan of that. as you have to give only sniff's, to much and you can cause engine damage. to stop the engine you just retard the throttle.

One half mile at medium engine rpm is really necessary. 4th gear at 5 mph is about right. Not faster than the governed engine speed, and speed lever setting. Jim

Turn it over by hand or with the starter with the switchover lever in both positions, it will be immediately obvious which is the diesel position and which is the gas because the compression is so much higher in diesel mode.

I take it the gas start side doesn't work -- why don't you try and fix that first? It's just gas and spark, and making sure the manifold butterflies flip over correctly.

First of all, if its been sitting 5 yrs, the rack is probably stuck in pump, WD9 lever on left is down for gas, and up for diesel, throttle is on right, and pulled back is giving it fuel
