What Did I Do Wrong ??

My Farmall A appears to be in gear although the shifter is in neutral. Bumped the starter button and it jumped backwards. The restoration is complete. I was trying to add air to the right rear tire and wanted to roll it forward for easier access. I did take the shift lever and cover off to inspect the transmission during the restoration - THAT IS ALL. What should I do ??????

You need to remove the cover again and make sure all the slots are lined up in a row then make sure when you put the cover back that the forks all go in their place. Not a huge mistake its easy to do.

The shift slots may be all properly lined up in the cover, but the reverse idler gear may have moved and not be caught in the shift fork. As Gene says, it's easy to not get it right. I've done it myself.

Before you bolt down the cover next time, put in just two bolts on opposite corners 'snug' and shift into all the gears to make sure the lever moves as it should. If any gear is not properly on a fork, the shifter won't move fully in one direction or the other. If it moves ok, finish putting in the rest of the bolts.

Hope that helps

did you do anything inside the transmission? other than look.
the bottom side of the shift lever, fits into a slot on a metal part that slides the gears. live up the slots with each other. this places the transmission in neutral gear. if you get some resistance to movement, you may have to rock tractor forwards and backwards and try again.
line up slots, replace shift lever into slots and let us know if this worked for you.
and as someone said put two bolts into transmission cover and check
