Making of Case IH Magnum book

Is there a book on the making of the Case IH magnum that would describe the merging of Case and IH engineering and the process of developing the Magnum tractor? If not that would certainly be interesting to read.

I did see a short movie on it, maybe 30 minutes long, after seeing that i figured out why IHC never had a Planetary system rear end, except for the 660, because they had to get some engineers over here from Germany to teach them how to cut helical gears, when they built the Magnums !

The transmissions in the IH 50 series used all helical cut gears and planetary final reduction. Same basic design the magnum is based off.

It's been a log time since i seen it, but they showed them taking the concrete out of the building and replacing the line, where the new Magnum was going to be built, and they said something about egineers from Germany were brought in, and showed them working on the blueprints etc .

The New Farmall which would become the Magnum after case entered the picture was essentially built by the time of the merger. After the merger the prototype was loaded up and hauled off to Racine. The biggest difference between the 50 series STS transmission and the Magnum powershift was the addition of clutch packs rather than synchronizers. The biggest things from the case side were the rear wheels and the engine.

The book RED TRACTORS gives about the best account of how the Magnum came to be that I have seen.

Years ago I was told by service man that the first 100-1000 magnums had IHC rear end castings from before the merger. They put soft plugs into the IHC castings where the torsion tube draft sensing was and went to electric load cell sensing. After the merger the new castings were filled in in the rear and weighed 4-500lbs more.

A good friend of mine sold one of the first Magnums in NC, and he said it had IH in the castings all over it.
