Re: Were the gas start diesels harder to crank?

No they had a low compression ratio on the gas cycle. I have started my M many times w/crank. Now the TD20 was quite a bit tougher to crank by hand.

not really much different starting them by crank. started my wd9 many times with the crank. the diesel 400's , 450's and 650's had distributers on them. have never tryed to crank one either. cranking with mag is no problem starting them..
the one that is a buggar to crank is the WD40. mine starts with 3 pulls on the crank. it amases me how easy that big engine starts with a crank. but its all you want to pull. if on diesel you wont even turn it over. that is the whole idea of the mag. she starts with a slow crank. no need to spin the engine. and yes timing has to be set to spec's , or your asking for trouble if advanced too far.

We had a TD6. It was an ideal low use ranch tractor because you didn't need batteries to get it running.

Choke full on and 2 - 3 pull ups on the crank. Back choke off to about half and another few pull ups on the crank and it would start.

The trip magneto drive meant you didn't have to spin it.

In contrast we have a TEA Ferguson that has acquired an engine with a Lucas magneto - apparently from a hay baler. This doesn't have a trip drive. We don't have a crank thankfully as you would have to spin it and pretty fast as it needs a good battery and plenty of spin to get it running.
