wiring diagram for M with mag

is there a way to run an Alt to run lights and starter while keeping the mag? i just rebuilt the mag and my M and she is running good; however, my 6v gen is shot. the owner at the alt shop suggested i convert to 12v alt.

i was looking at the wiring diagrams, only to find diagrams with distributors. i converted my SC to 12v with no problems cause it has a distributor.

last option, i have a couple of dist. on some parts tractors, i can replace the mag with a dist. then go from there.

i guess i just want to keep the mag cause i spent $$$$ on repairing it.

Magnetos are self-powewred and starting/charging system voltage or ground polarity make NO difference, as there's NO connection between the two systems.

Assuming you will be using a standard Delco 10SI "3 wire" alternator, the easiest way is wire it up same as for distributor ignition with two exceptions:

1 - Omit the ballast resistor and wiring to the (non-existant) coil/distributor.

2 - Substitute a double pole, double pole (DPDT) switch for the original ignition switch. Wire one switch pole to supply battery voltage to the alternator warning light/#1 circuit with the switch "ON". Wire the other pole to ground the magneto with the switch "OFF".

This works for me on my '45 magneto M.Useing a one wire alternator, run just one wire from alternator, through the amp gauge, then
to positive post of battery. All you need to do.Then pull powre from ammeter to light switch. Simple as it gets.Furthermore,I
completely stripped out the old frayed harness.'rewired'it.Ran one wire from mag to kill switch.Wired the alt as described
above.Taped everything up neat and clean.Original? no. Serviceable and reliable? yes.

If you just want to start the tractor,a chargeing system is not neccesary on a mag tractor.A mag tractor will start for months without chargeing the battery.every month or two(or 3) just hook a battery charger over night.I use this method on my JD A,and on the F20 I used to own. You only need the chargeing system if you intend to run lights and other electrical accorys.

I have done a couple of those using the Delco 10si 3 wire and used an oil pressure switch to turn the alternator on that way no forgetting to shut it off it doe it on its own

I like your diagram Jim. That is how I do it.Except I haven't used the oil pressure switch.I will remember for next time,or if any of my present tractors develops a 'back wash'/(drain) problem.
