Super A Question

I removed the head off my 1948 Super A to replace the head gasket and have the head resurfaced and the valves done as well. My question is what gaskets are the best to go back with? IH wanted nearly $65 just for the head gasket alone. The auto parts store can get the fel pro gasket kit for $25. I've used fel pro before and they have been good gaskets, what would you guys go back with??

Also since the valves will be out i'm putting new valve seals in as well, where is a good place to get them? Anyone have the part number for the valve seals?? I looked on the IH parts catalog but i'm not sure if I was looking at the right thing, they called them retainers??

FelPro is as good as it gets, and the set from the stealership may well be re-badged Felpros.

As to the valve stem seals, you will NOT find them in the parts catalog, as they were never used from the factory.

Ask the shop that did your valves if they can help, there's generic seals out there, but the area of the guides protruding above the head MAY need to be machined to make room for the seals.

On my Farmall A it would smoke after idling a while. I was able to get valve seals from the machine shop who did the head work prior. He had ones that fit fine. I had to install with the head on which works OK if you do it properly.
