Does anyone know how to replace the break shaft bearing on a break band farmall H tractor? Mine is
completely gone and needs to be replaced. ive read people say not to remove the cast iron seal retainer
around the shaft until you remove the bull gear First or that it could cause it to break and not sure
where that gear is located or how to even remove it. any help would be very helpful at this point thanks!

The design of the differential and final drive system includes a carrier for the "brake shaft" that shaft is driven by the ring gear and differential spider gears. Th assure that it was strong, IH had the inner support bearing surrounded by that carrier casting. with a slot for the bull gear to run as it engaged the pinion. The pinion is on the shaft you are looking at. The bull gear is behind it and it is big. In the diagram I linked, the part #6 The
BULL PINION SHAFT BEARING CAGE WITH RING, and Part #11 BULL AND BRAKE SHAFT PINION are the things of importance. In Part 6 you can see the slot in which the pinion is exposed to the bull gear Part #23. The bull gear prevents the cage from being removed because it is in that slot. The axle must be removed to allow the bull gera to move rearward enough to clear the carrier for removal. It can be done from access through the PTO hole, but it is a tight squeeze to get the bolt out. Many use a block of wood or aluminum to allow the axle bolt to push the axle out as the bolt is removed. Some prefer to remove the trans top to have easy access. Jim

I have found that removing the top cover is a lot easier than working through the PTO hole. Getting the bull gear back on the pinon shaft is the issue. Taking the cover off also allows me to remove all the ball bearings ( and years of built up crud ) that are down in the bottom of the differential.

Be sure to buy a high quality bearing, they are the same size but have a higher number of balls in the bearing. You might take a hard look at the other side while it is open. Most likely you will need a new top cover gasket. If the new gasket may appears too small, soak it in water to return it to its original size.
