farmall 400 battery box

Trying to put a new battery box on our old 400. A little more of a project than I expected. Some things have been cobbled up before we got it, including the ground strap hanging out of the top of the box. My question is where did it go originally? Did it hook to the bolt in the center of the box at the rear where the floor plate is notched around a brass sleeve? Everything was so rusted and full of 60 year old dirt, we actually took box off in pieces. Only one bolt had enough head on it to get a wrench on it. I got it out, others are soaking in penetrant now. Any tips on getting bolts with all the corners rusted off appreciated also!
Thanks KRob

have removed cornerless bolts by welding a nut with a large enough hole to go over the damaged head. allows a larger wrench to be used and heat from welding helps break rust loose.

Can someone tell me what the center bolt in the picture is? There is a hole in new battery box big enough to swallow it, just curious.

Sleeve or spacer was used on a longer bolt to raise bolt head and battery cable mounting up. Two bolts inside rear corners of the box was the rear box mounting. May want to hit down on bolt head several times to jar bolt before trying to turn, helps loosen bolt in the top cover bolt hole and in transmission housing. Like other posted, weld a nut on bolt if rounded off. Cheep impact sockets also work with a size selected that will drive on some damaged heads.

I've been soaking and tapping. I think the welder might be next logical step. I was hoping that center one was for the ground.

That is where the ground strap mounts; there is a spacer under the cable so be sure all connections are shiny & clean.

So far Ive got all but the ground strap bolt and the front left bolt out. Letting them soak over night and we'll see what happens tomorrow night.
