Fast hitch plow

just found a 3 bottom fast hitch plow for sale, $300. Question is, will my 300 U handle that OK? I am looking to do gardens and such. Currently using a 2 bottom but always leave a wide space on edge untilled as tires are wide.
thanks in advance

What size tires u got on that 300 Utility, i know a 3-14 mounted is to narrow for a SMTA or 400 unless you dish the wheels inward. A friend pull's a 3-14 No.8, with his 300 Farmall.

Ddepends on the soil you are plowing. It will lift it fine, but pulling is a different matter. try it and see. 300 is a good
price. You should use the 2 bottom. But move your wheels in to the right tread.

I agree with Delta. In sandy loam, or soil rich in organics, it will be fine. Sticky clay nope. 2 16 yes 3 14 may need a 350 and then will work hard in clay.

A 300u takes a special plow-it is fast hitch but with a top link.It is model UF-20 2 bottom,or UF-30 3 bottom. The top link attaches to the rock shaft and this is how you control the angle of the plow points. We had a 211 fast hitch plow that came with our 340u,and we tried it on the 300u one time, but it did not work very well.Mark

My 300u would only pull a 2 bottom in my soils in 2nd gear, unless the soils was recently plowed, then maybe 3rd gear.Mark

You might not be able to hitch it, depending on which size tongs are on the plow and which size receivers are on your 300. Some of the 300's had the smaller receivers.

I have an IH 311 3-14 fast-hitch plow that my day used on an IH 400 for plowing back in the 60s. We also have an IH 300 utility. Usually I would plow the garden with the 300 utility and the 311 plow because it worked better in the garden which was close to some low tree branches. A 3-14 fast-hitch plow will work on your 300 utility in soft worked ground. But in hard clay soil, I don't think you will be able to pull it. But if you plan to use it just for gardens, I think it will work just fine. Al

I have a 311 fast-hitch plow that my dad used for years on an IH 400 with wheels dished out. So not sure why the wheels would need to be dished in. Attached are couple of pictures with the plow on my 450-D with wheels dished out. Al

I had a 3x14 no 311, hooked on to it in the yard, kinda looked it over, i didn't think it went to right enough, thought it was going to plow about 20 inches with the first bottom, so never used it and had a chance to buy a 3 x 16 and a buyer for the 3x14, so thats how i solved that problem, and the 3 x16 works good.

$300 is not a good price if it is all worn out and it is an older plow with the parts no longer available.

If it's a new enough you can get the parts but expect to spend upwards of $200 per bottom to replace moldboards, shins, points, and landsides.

Now, a 3-bottom plow is not the solution for "leaves a wide space on edge untilled" depending on what you mean. A 3-bottom plow with a 300 Utility is iffy in many soils to begin with.

If you're leaving a space on the RIGHT side of the tractor untilled, that is because you have the wheels set too wide. You need to narrow up the wheels so the first bottom throws the dirt into the previous furrow.

If you are leaving a space on the LEFT side of the tractor, you get that in the next pass. On smaller older tractors like this you simply don't have enough traction or power to pull a plow that wide.
