Farmall H throttle adjustment?

I'm trying to adjust the sawtooth throttle on my H. I can open the throttle to 8 notches from the top and it is at the 1815 rated rpm. When I go above that it will overspeed, up to 2500rpm! At the last notch on the quadrant. I have tried the adjustments in the governor, the only thing I have been able to do is set the high rpm screw so it stops at the 8th notch from the top. I should be able to have full use of the quadrant and not go over the 1815 rpm, right? Does anyone have a pic of the throttle linkage under the hood and how to adjust it? I've also tried adjusting the rod in the governor between it and the carb, it is tightened all the way up now. Any ideas what I am missing?

The hand lever is not the control of the High Idle speed. The internal springs weights, and position stops (screws and lock devices) control that from inside the gov. THe hand lever should pull the governor lever to its full travel. Over speeding is a direct indication of someone tinkering with the governor internals. A hard ware store spring, or someones idea of more power by reducing the mass of the weights are possibilities. The main spring pushes the weights closed, opening the throttle plate. The weights work against the spring trying to close the throttle. Your issue is in that area. A service manual is your friend. Jim

I have been through the governor. I replaced all the bearings and the spring with one from steiner. The weights had no wear at all, they looked new. I have the idle and high speeds stops adjusted now so I have around 500rpm idle and 1815 high speed. This way I can only pull the throttle back about 3/4 of the way. What does the springs and the double nuts adjust in the linkage on top off the head? Thanks

After governor internal linkage is synchronized to carburetor butterfly shaft at front of throttle tube and idle stop set, then adjust the linkage from hand throttle. Two nuts on the throttle rod are adjusted to change the rod length to keep the hand throttle in the notch range or attempt to. If you adjust the rod length so long that when the high speed stop screw in the governor contacts housing and the rear spring on throttle rod is completely compressed at the same time you have it two long. If you watch when pulling hand throttle wide open adjusted that tight the throttle rod will bow or steering post will try to move back. Over time the linkage will give so the hand lever will need more pull to rear.

What has been changed with the rod going to the gov and what has been changed in the gov is the shaft going from gov to the carb correct hooking to the carb slots enguaged ect. Has carb been changed and throttle plate and shaft good the bracket that fastens to the carb shaft loose thsy can get loose and move then stick.

The carb has not recently been off, I believe the linkage between the carb and governor is okay, the throttle is responsive in both directions but I will double check. I have had this issue for as long as I can remember. I always thought it seems like it was running very fast and at the last couple notches on the throttle it would surge and no matter how I adjusted the carb it didn't make a difference. I finally got a hand tachometer and checked it out, it was running almost 2500rpm at full Throttle! Is it normal to be able to over rev the engine like that. Right now I have the governor adjusted so it will not go over1850rpm but I can only pull the throttle back 8 notches from the top. I thought maybe there is an adjustment I'm missing in the linkage so I could use the whole throttle quadrant. Maybe I should just leave it alone?

Just leave it alone, because when you come to a hill open it up and you will make it a lot farther up the hill or all the way up. That is a lot faster
then shifting into 4th. Just mark your throttle so you know where 1850 is.

If you have been adjusting the linkage between governor and carburetor, you need to get that set correctly first of all. That is the wrong place to adjust to try to change engine speed for any reason. You take pin out of clevis, pull throttle back wide open, lift link to carburetor up so throttle plate in carb is fully open and adjust that link for a free pin. Then, seeing as how you have the speed set in governor where you want it , all you can do is adjust external linkages for full travel to both stop screws in governor. Like has been pointed out, someone may have installed lighter weights or your spring may be too strong. Do not over look a bent steering post that makes it impossible to adjust linkage properly. Had that happen just a few years ago on a Super H. After installing head, could not get linkage where I wanted it. Steering post was bent and a little bit goes a long way on that throttle adjustment.
