Thanks Pete;
I looked for dings and any imperfections. I thought I'd see some, what with all the handling I had to do to work on the spool. None were visible, though I burnished the front end of the spool a bit.
I finally decided to just take a risk and do something I NEVER think of doing with finely machined parts: I just got a big BFH and gently rapped it in. Once in, it seemed OK. For some reason, it just fits tight at the first part of the insertion.
I fired the old beast up, and everything works.
SOOOOOoooooOOOOO, thanks to all who helped me, for your advice, knowledge, and patience. Everything works, and so far as I know nothing leaks. For now... it's been a long slog:
hydraulic leaks
broken hydraulic lines
plugged hydraulic filter
random broken parts in hydraulic filter cavity (EGAD!)
leaky gas tank
gummed up carburetor
bad/missing exhaust gasket
aux lines welded in really bad position
aux valves of mixed type and assembled incorrectly by someone before me
leaky valve cover gasket
probably a few things I forgot, deliberately, and when I started I knew nothing about tractors.
Anyway, the Old Beast is almost ready for winter snow. Just a couple trivial things to do.
Thanks again to EVERYONE for all the help on this website.
And don't worry, you've probably not heard the last of me yet.
Jimo
