Super A Throttle Problems

There are 15 notches for use by the governor control lever on my Super A.
When lever is in notch 1-4 there is no noticeable difference in engine rpm. Simply at idle speed.
Notches 5-11 are "useable" and noticeable change in rpm when moving thru these notches.
Notches 12-15 cannot be "reached" by the lever - it just will not go that far forward.

As expected, I can use my hand to manually manipulate the governor connecting rod to carb and get increased rpm.

Carb is a new one I purchased from Yesterday's Tractor as I recall.

My concern is no noticeable change in notches 1-4 and unable to use notch 12-15 for faster rpm.

And your solutions are??????

Thanks.

There is a procedure in the Blue Ribbon Service Manual to set up the governor. I don't have it memorized.
There are parts in the governor that may need replaced, springs, bearings etc.

When it is adjusted correctly, every notch should make a change in engine speed.

So did you adjust the rod from the governor to your new carb?, loosen a clevis on the end of the rod and adj. Explained in your IT manual. I had to change mine when I installed a new Zenith.

Most tractors, and IH machines in particular have a dead spot from full idle position of the hand lever to some distance toward full speed. That is typical. The full open position of yours is not quite right. First let's check the carb to governor link.
With the hand lever moved as far as it will go toward wide open, remove the link to the governor from the carb lever at the new carb. The rod length should just allow the connection to be perfect, with the lever on the carb at full open and the rod aligned with the hole. (wear and looseness here is bad) If the rod alignment to the hole is off, adjust the rod.
Next remove the rod from the governor input arm on the governor. It comes from the hand lever. move this lever through its range of motion. It should have spring tension on it toward idle. Now, holding the governor lever against the spring, adjust the rod length to the hand lever so it allows the hand lever to be at the next to last notch on its ratchet toward wide open. See how it all works. THis might result in greater dead zone toward idle, but it should provide full power when needed. If external springs are weak or broken replace them (hardware store matched springs are OK on the outside of the governor, as they do not change internal governing action. If the RPM seems correct, or you use a tach on the engine and it is close to spec, all is well. If the RPM is off, or the governor does not respond to load, let us know. Jim

Thanks, Jim Nicholson!

The rod alignment from carb to governor link is correct.

I've been looking at the I&T manual and the SA parts manual as well as tinkering with two spare governors I have from old engines to try and more fully understand their workings.

I will be working on the other side of the governor next week as you have suggested; then will remove the governor and inspect the inside if neeeded.

It's probably time for me to buy a tach. Any recommends on a fairly inexpensive, but quality one??

LCD Automotive Multimeter with Tachometer Kit
Cen-Tech - item#95670

The one above has multiple uses and is accurate enough. The one below is only a Tachometer.

How fast is it really spinning? This tachometer allows you to take accurate RPM measurements without even touching the spinning object. Able to measure 6 to 99,999 RPM with ? 0.05% accuracy, the tachometer stores the last, minimum and maximum readings. The tachometer features a five-digit LCD display and comes with a case and reflective tape.

5 digit LCD display
RPM range: 6 - 99,999
Memory mode stores Last, Min, and Max readings

Received tach and tested - first on a fan blade - huh?

Then on a proper place.

Approx 1450 rpm max

Approx 850 rpm lowest - although I think I could have throttled down a bit more.
