it b me again, question?

now that ive got everything back together after a head gasket replacement, i set the valves at .017 cold on Molly, my M. when i started her up a let her run a short while you can hear a miss.

if the valves our out of adjust a little, would this cause a miss. i rebuilt the mag and set the points while the mag was off.

she starts right up, nonsmoker, but now has a miss?

any comments?

thanks

yes, when a valve is too tight it will cause a miss, as there will be no compression. the setting is .017 hot. i adjust .019 cold. run it to operating temp then recheck the setting, after the head retorque.then another run through the second time.
there is a procedure for valve adjusting, so if not using one of the two, very possible they can be out.
tight valves also will burn out.

Double check the points and plug gap, if ok then do the valves again. If that still does not solve the problem then time by ear and see if
you can get the miss out.

A simple miss can be caused by a good many things.
#1 valve not set right or sticking
#2 a bad spark plug.
#3 bad spark plug wire and if you do not have true wire plug wires on it and it has a mag that could be the problem big time
#4 point not set right or have slipped
#5 a cracked mag cap.
#6 compression being low on one cylinder
#7 something wrong with the intake manifold or a vacuum leak

And there are probably a few more things that can cause that

Why would you mess up the timing when it is firing on 3 & missing on 1? Take a good running engine & you can adjust the timing all you want & it still won't miss. Timing by ear is bad anyway.

well when one has a miss the first thing to do is a compression check then you go from there. also read the spark plugs as you take them out, pretty easy to tell which cyl. is not firing. adjusting timing does absolutly nothing. a miss is either no compression or no spark. points will not cause a dead miss. its either a valve, plug, or wire as is the most common. or the firing order is not correct. bad plugs will cause a miss fire but not a dead miss unless the plug is totally bad. can be a bad plug wire also. plus you got to think how it run before the tear down. if it did not miss, then u did something wrong. but without a compession check its all guess work. so get that done first.

In directly point can cause a miss if the distributor bushing are bad so at one point the lobe on the shaft dose not let the point open like they should

Did you have the plugs in and set it down on them. It could have mashed one shut or broke it. Been loong time since I had an H head off.
