Farmall 450 as a pulling tractor

Just looking to get some input from people that
have experience with Farmall 450's as to how it
would do as a pulling tractor. I've only had John
deeres and currently run a JD 60, mostly in stone
boat pulling from the 6500# class to 12,000# class.
I didn't know if a 450 could do the equivalent and
have enough power to not stall out or if this was
unrealistic thinking on my part. Thanks for your
input!

In my opinion the difficulty with the engine is that it has 3 main bearings. The power can be made through RPM, cam modifications, high dome pistons, shaved heads, and other pretty expensive changes. At or near 100 hp (opinion) they become grenades. For some classes of pulls they work well with modest investment. Jim

I have been pulling stock and local classes with with my stock 450 and do really well with it. I have been pulling with it about 3 years. It took a while to get the weights and tire pressure set to where it pulls good (tractor weighs in at 8,000 lbs.). I have yet to run out of power. I pull in 0-10,000 lb. and 7,500-10,000 lb classes and we pull percentage not distance.

If you are looking at "super stock," I recall seeing an advertisement in the Red Power magazine a while back about a company who specialized in super stock engines for the Farmall M through 450 models. As I recall, the upper end of what they built was something on the order of 125 to 150 horsepower. I do not know the particulars of what they did to the engine itself and its modifications, but Janicholson noted the fundamental modifications to start on that path towards that sort of power delivery. I apologize I just do not remember the name of the company who did this, though.

The T/A would help you a bunch....if you were pulling in a heavier class and started losing power. Don't think it would be of much help if you were spinning out though
