Jumping Batteries

The ground does not matter at all. Just jump from positive to positive at the battery, and negative to negative in the same way. Do not allow the tractor to touch the truck or car in the process, but it works fine. If using thin booster cables, let it charge the tractor battery for 15 minutes. If using thick copper cable jumpers, 4 to5 minutes. Jim

Also make the last connection on a good ground & not at the battery. Remove that connection 1st so if it sparks it won't blow a battery.

Had the battery in my Chebby truck explode once, when I went to start it, thought I had been shot with a 12 gage. Truck rocked sideways hard, a few times. I bailed out sideways, ran for cover. Covered the insides under hood with sulfuric acid. Point being, hydrogen gas WILL sometimes build up, and the stuff will light off like a 12 gage. If you were under the hood, and got shot with the acid, it would be very very bad. Do whatever you can to avoid sparks, near the battery.

You ask "Is it harmful to jump a negative ground 12 volt system from a positive ground system"

ANSWER NO

Provided you observe the safety measures listed below (which is true for any jumping) such as DO NOT make the last connection at battery top where explosive gasses may be present and don't let a Neg ground jump vehicle touch your Pos ground tractor or vice versa..

When I was a kid working in a service station I had one blow up when I was right next to it had acid allover my face and don't have much hearing in that ear. I ended up replacing the battery for the customer and washed and washed and washed my face and his car. That was 40 years ago. WOW am I getting old.
