Need some advice on a late D-282 block from a 656 I have, SN 82391. Block is stripped down except for pulling the sleeves. Repair manual and parts list shows sleeves are coded S-1, S-2, and S-3, but I have not found any such code stamp on the block yet. What it does have stamped on the deck is the letter L next to cylinders 1,2,3,4, and 6. Letter H is next to #5. Pistons have the same stamped letters too. Where would the S code be stamped if it has one? Also wonder if the coding is critical, any aftermarket sleeve sets only list one size. Can these be pulled with a manual sleeve puller, or should I get the air over hydraulic puller a friend has that I've used in the past? The last Perkins dry sleeves were a bear to do by hand, but the hydraulic one made short work of the job. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the pistons were fitted to the sleeves. They don't come out too hard most times. Use a good fitting puck.

Those are the heavy press sleeves ,install to .045 above deck,

IH was so sure that they would stay there that they said it

was alright if it was only .018 above deck. Poor way to

maintain a fire dam to protect the gasket. I have honed .001

out of the block ,bored counter bores and used to early flanged

sleeves, works much better. I made a plate with a .045 groove

to install the heavy press ones.
