200 Starter help

Cleaned up generator commuter and got my system charging again.

Decided to remove starter connections to clean. Switch stud ended up spinning. Took apart and cleaned up copper, tried using a double nut to fix stud. Reassembled and starter would barely turn over. Rechecked connections and tried again. Same with little smoke from starter cable (0 ga). Connection at starter got warm and ground-to-frame connection. Switch contacts seem to be getting good contact. Starter copper post is dented from use. Got a tractor supply switch, installed, and barely cranks with some more smoke. So didn't crank it long. Sounds like a computer case fan running. Tested battery voltage and is 6.15 v.

[b:c8cc4466c6]Is my starter toast[/b:c8cc4466c6]? Before I messed with starter it would start. Sometimes slow and be a pain, but battery wasn't getting charged. I've been charging batt before use usually.

Any heat in the terminals or contacts in the system are resistance. If the stud in the switch turned it may be touching the switch housing causing a short. Or
the starter could be actually needing bearings. The armature can drag on the field poles and ruin it as well as cause slow cranking. Jim

Here is the current news on my starter. I took starter by my local starter/alt shop. Had it rebuilt with new switch, bushings, brushes, & drive. Now it still does not turn over the engine. Mostly clicks or very slow revolution (sounds like a partial revolution). Got it started once and none since.

I replaced batt wires and connections. Got welding cables and soldered the connectors as last were crimped and had corrosion. Ran the ground directly to starter bolt. Still same deal.

Before I take the starter back and see what the shop says; after rebuilt he spun it over with 12v, seemed ok. I asked about bearing replaced and he said they didn't have bearings just bushings. He seemed knowledgable about the old tractor 6v starters. Should I take starter apart and check for myself? How hard is it to get out the case? I would think the brushes against the commuter would be a PITA. Any advice? Thanks.

I would also add, I took batt by napa and asked guy to load test it to make sure it's good. Voltage good and he said it was hot enough to cook an egg. So I wouldn't think its a batt issue. Don't want to buy a new 6v to just see.

I don't trust those quick battery tests done at auto parts store. I had a battery that went dead. Started car up and drove to Sams for a test. Guy said battery was good. Next time battery died, I removed battery from car and took in. Guy said it tested bad - gave me an adjustment. So much for their test.

Yeah I am suspicious of the battery. It burns all the lights bright though. I have tried charging over night and starting to see if it had any extra umph.. nope.

I also removed the switch and touched batt cable directly to the starter post to rule out switch issues.
