The 47 M water pump developed a drip past the packing seal and gland nut last winter. I removed the pump from engine, pulled out the impeller/shaft, removed the old packing, cleaned the parts and reassembled with 4 new packing seal segments from the dealer. I snugged up the gland nut, but not all the way. Over several hours of use the water pump began to seep again so I tightened the gland nut about a 1/4 turn at a time and it helped for a while, but the leak started again each time. Now I have tightened the nut all the way and it still leaks.
What do I need to do differently? Lube of some type on the packing when resealing the pump? Grease the grease fitting on the water pump? I don't know if I have room for a 5th piece of packing. Looking any tips or tricks you my have, thanks.
