Farmall A help (continued from yesterday)

I got some more detailed pictures to continue my questions from yesterday about my A with a 100 steering support and instrument cluster. I guess the super a used the same style as the 100 from pictures I see. Any ways the more I look into this the more questions are raised. My serial tag suggest 1947 A. The block casting code ends with J suggesting cast in 1940. The center section casting code ends with Y Suggesting cast in 53. Anyways I just want to order a battery box for it and am concerned about what to order to fit it. Here are some pictures.

Kevin,

It "looks" like to me that a standard box for a Super A, 100, 140 would work on your tractor. Since you don't have the hydraulic unit, one end would not be closed up snugly but it shouldn't hurt anything. You have the 2 mounting holes on the torque tube just under the battery, on each side. You also have 1 hole at the rear of the steering post support, on each side. Those 3 holes on each side mount the sides of the battery box. The upper hole is fine thread, and the lower 2 holes are coarse thread.

I have battery box sides made for the Super A, 100, and 140 tractors and you could cut your own holes to make sure it mounted correctly. I didn't make tops for them because I don't see where the tops are nothing but just annoying.

What is the casting date on the transmission?

Sounds to me like the center torque tube was replaced at some point by one from a Super A tractor.

I'm with RTR. Every time I find all the bolts and covers and button up the battery, something
happens to cause me to open it back up. I think the batteries are afraid of the dark.

The sides are a real pain to install and remove, but if you know how to do it right it isn't that bad. The box sides are imperitave because it stregthens the steering support and it keeps the battery secure....not to mention looks much nicer. The box top on the other hand isn't something I care too much about having. My battery box sides look like the originals and are slightly thicker gauge metal.

I will have to grab tranny casting date
Tomorrow. Just got home from work and it's
2am. I'm looking at pictures, I see what
you mean now about the hyd closing the
front of the box. So in these 4 piece kits
what is there? Sides, a lid and a bottom
plate that sits on the angle iron? Kinda
Bummed about that, I want it to look neat
and sealed like it belongs. Maybe I'll have
to buy what I can and fab up a front?

O boy, so I'm confusing my self even more looking in catalogs. I see two different boxes for the super a. A one piece that only fits up to a certain serial number. Then the 4 piece that fits serial number and up but also says can be used to replace the one piece one. Anyways both of these would cover all sides of the battery from the looks of it. I like the idea of your sides being thicker though. What's the deal on them? Would it be easy for me to fit a front panel and lid?

Transmission is "o" so 1945. At this point
obviously I know the torque tube is not
original to this tractor, what about the
engine block and tranny though? J on the
block for 1940 o on the tranny for 45.
Serial tag is 47 Louisville tractor though?
Is my whole tractor more than likely pieced
together from parts?

the steering support you have needs the battery box to bolted to it and to the bell housing. it also adds a little strength to the steering support. I would get the three piece box if it were me
