UHaul auto transport for a WFE farmall M

Hey guys,

Have to move a Farmall M with wide front end about 150 miles with an F-150. Thinking that I can just drive it onto one and move it that way. The transport lists it can carry 5,290 lbs. Do-able I am thinking, yes?

I hauled a Farmall Super A on a U-Haul car carrier. Of course I used a few extra straps beyond what is used for a car to secure it. I hauled it a long ways, some 900 miles or so. No problems.

The only problem I had was when I told the national office what I was going to do they said it would be okay and gave me two places near the origin point. One local place said they wouldn't let me haul a tractor on a car carrier. The other local place said they would, it was about 20 miles out of the way but I ended up going there since the other place wouldn't do it. This was with UHAUL.
 
the only way i would put an M on there if i was only going 10 miles on country road. pretty light trailer and your maxed out.
 
A little too small for an M. Go to someone who rents real trailers, you will likely get one that will hold around 10000 or more. Count the bolts that hold the wheels on. 6 is not enough, 8 will handle it.
 
6 bolt wheels can be used on 5200 lb axles giving the trailer a weight rating of around 10,000 lbs - I have a trailer set up this way from the factory. This would give a payload capacity of about 7500 lbs (after subtracting the weight of the trailer itself) which should be fine for an M unless it is really ballasted heavy.
 
I agree, you want a heavier trailer than that auto transport. And make sure the trailer you get has working brakes. Your 150 will pull it okay but stopping can be another issue.
 
That's ok, I have never seen one. I just look at the number of bolts on the wheels and can assume the weight is ok. The dealer where I live always sold the 7500 (with 6 bolts) or a heavy weight exceeding 10000 lbs. I have a 2005 1/2 GMC with 4.10 axles with a 7500 lb trailer -- probably somewhat overweight pulled a couple of pulls.
 
Hauled a 61' 3/4 ton Chevy pickup on one last fall. 650 miles, mostly freeway, over 3 mountain passes. Eastern Wash. to Central Mont. Worked fine. M might be a bit heavier but similar.
 
A Farmall M with wide front end will weigh about 6,000 to 6,500 lbs. I haul a Farmall 450 and with 2 weights on each rear wheel and front wheel weights with no fluid in rears she weighs 6,700 lbs.and its a good load for a GMC K1500 4x4. My trailer is a 14,000 lb. trailer and if I hauled an M I would use 12,000 lb trailer at the lest.

rustred, where do you get they are aluminum? U-Haul trailers are all galvanized and they do have 3500# axles under them.
 
If you overload the trailer the wheel bearings could fail. This happened recently to us. We have a 7200 GVW 18 ft. car trailer with electric brakes and planned to haul a 4000 lbs cultivator from Illinois to New York. Trailer weighs 2000 lbs so 5200 lbs in the max load it can carry. We got some extra parts to go with it, put as much in the pickup bed as possible and the rest on the trailer with the cultivator, but didn't realize we had about 8000 lbs. on the trailer + 2000 lbs. trailer weight. All bearings were replaced last summer so we never expected them to fail. Made it into Ohio when one wheel failed. Not fun being stranded on a busy highway and having to pay a shop $1000 to replace all the bearings again and 1 wheel hub.

ok, the trailer side of it has been covered pretty well.

Now, for the "legal" question: What is the CGVW rating for your truck? If the truck+trailer+tractor weight exceeds the CGVW, (combined gross vehicle weight) you are DOT illegal. Also, your vehicle is not designed to operate at highway speed over that combined weight rating (brakes and bearings can overheat, as well as your drive train....all leading to failure). You also might want to ask your insurance company if you are covered in an accident if you are operating over the CGVW.

Lots of people ignore that rating and operate over it: until something fails and someone or something gets hurt.......
