6 v generator

i have 5 or 6 6 volt generators. i do not know how to check the armatures and field. is there a good way to check them without a lot of testing equipment?

Hook up a 6v source with 35 amp or so capacity (or a charged 6v battery) from positive to the starter frame, and touch the A terminal with the other jumper cable. The generator should spin like a motor. With a smaller jumper 12gauge wire will do) now jump from the frame of the gen to the F terminal. If the gen now slows down, the arm and field are good. If the gen was positive ground. If not it use the other polarity to test. If they are not from a Farmall, and might be Autolite or Ford, the first test will work, but the second should not be done. A circuit gen only, not B circuit. Jim

In addition to Jims good advice here are a few more juicy tidbits.

ARMATURE: Use an ohm meter on the low ohms scale and put one lead on the iron shaft and touch the other to the copper commutator strips. If there's continuity from the commutator to the steel shaft the armature is shorted out THATS BAD. You can also verify none of the commutator strips or the solder from armature wiring to the commutator aren't burned or melted.

FIELDS: There should be continuity from the gennys FLD post, to and through the center splice where the two fields connect, then the other end of the other field which connects to the ARM post (maybe 3 to 6 ohms total for both fields) or third brush if a three brush generator. BUT THERE SHOULD BE NO SHORTS OR CONTINUITY TO CASE/FRAME WITH ARMATURE OR BRUSHES OUT OF THE CIRCUIT (or brushes raised and insulated off armature). The fields themselves are insulated and shouldn't have contact with the iron field poles or case. The fields do join up with the ARM terminal or third brush. This is for Class A systems
